Course Content: 

Modern Greece was founded on the ruins of the multi ethnic Ottoman Empire. Consequently, minorities have played a prominent role in Greece from its foundation, both in internal politics and in the relation with the neighbouring states. However, the question of minorities has often been ignored or suppressed in the public debate. However, in the period after 1990 we have witnessed a new interest in the study of minority related issues. This has not only had consequences for our understanding of minorities, but also for Greek society at large. The course will scrutinise the role of minorities, past and present, in Greece and the Balkans. Central themes includes: The Muslim minority of Greek Thrace, The Slavic speakers of Macedonia, the integration of disparate population elements into the modern Greek state, Greece and the international system of minority protection (League of Nations, UN, OSCE, EU, ECHR , etc.), minorities in inter-Balkan relations, and finally minorities and democratisation.

Learning Outcomes: 

The student will acquire a knowledge of general minority issues, the Greek particularities and minority questions in the Balkans in a comparative perspective.
