Course Content:
A brief introduction to the history of Greek foreign policy – a brief introduction to the international setting of the Cold War – the ideological context of Greek foreign policy – from the ‘peril from the North’ to the ‘threat from the East’: the shifting priorities of national security – the Greek national claims after World War II – Greece and the Western Alliance – Greek-American relations – the Cyprus Question – Greek-Turkish relations – Greece’s relations with its Balkan neighbours – the course towards European integration – domestic factors and foreign policy: the concept of ‘political cost’

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completing this course, students are expected to
• understand the framework of foreign policy formulation and implementation in the case of Greece, a small state within a variable international environment (e.g., bipolarity at the global level, national antagonisms at the peripheral level);
• understand the role of domestic factors in foreign policy formulation and implementation of a small state;
• understand the role of material factors (e.g., hard power) as well as of culture and ideas in foreign policy formulation and implementation of states in general;
• grasp the facts regarding the most salient issues of Greek foreign policy after World War II;
• critically approach ‘established’ and common perceptions of the international position and foreign policy of Greece.
